Learn & Go with Dr. Laurie: Lymph node identification

Did you know your pup has little “health checkpoints” all over their body?

They’re called lymph nodes—and if you know where to find them, you can catch infection, inflammation, or even cancer before your vet does.

Let me walk you through where they are and why every pet parent should check them regularly.

Submandibular (Under the Jaw)

Right beneath the jawbone. You may feel a small salivary gland—but the lymph node should either be tiny or not noticeable. If you feel two big lumps, call your vet.

Prescapular (In Front of the Shoulder Blade)

Located at the front edge of the shoulder. Swelling here could signal issues in the neck or front leg.

Axillary (Armpit)

Hidden in the armpit area. You normally shouldn’t feel this one at all. If you notice a lump while rubbing their belly—get it checked.

Inguinal (Groin)

Deep in the groin. This lymph node is rarely felt. If you can feel it, schedule a vet visit.

Popliteal (Behind the Knee)

Tucked behind the knee, in the triangle between the hamstrings and calf muscles.
This is the most common lymph node to enlarge.
It should feel like a pea or small grape, and both sides should feel the same.

Remember:
If you notice any changes—swelling, new lumps, or size differences—see your veterinarian promptly.
